On May 3, 1937, Margaret Mitchell won the Pulitzer prize for Gone With the Wind. The epic novel broke records when it sold a million copies in six months during the Great Depression. The novel now sells approximately 250,000 copies per year and has been translated into 40 different languages, making it one of the most popular books of all time. To celebrate Mitchell’s unexpected award-winning masterpiece, we’re recalling 25 Gone With the Wind quotes, from either the novel or the film, that give us chills! Come along for the ride and relive some of the drama we love so much!

1. Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn (坦白说亲爱的,一点不在乎)
This heartbreaking line is what informs the audience that Rhett Butler is positively finished with his relationship with Scarlett. We can still see his figure disappear into the fog as he leaves her forever…

2. No, I don’t think I will kiss you, although you need kissing, badly. That’s what’s wrong with you. You should be kissed and often, by someone who knows what he’s doing
Oh the masculine presence we swoon after! Sometimes we all want a man who’s going to take charge and tell us how things should be… sometimes.

4. After all…tomorrow is another day
Despite losing so much that she loved in life, Scarlett, at the film’s end, announces her resolve to keep on going. Her attitude is refreshing and entirely necessary when all that’s left is hope.

5. If I said I was madly in love with you you’d know I was lyingScarlett confesses to Rhett before they are married that she doesn’t love him and he confesses he wants her to learn to love him… Such honesty and vulnerability from the both of them is beautiful, though maybe not the ideal foundation for a marriage.

6. I’ve loved you more than I’ve ever loved any woman and I’ve waited for you longer than I’ve waited for any womanIs there a woman on Earth who doesn’t want to hear this? We think not.

7. A cat’s a better mother than you
As Rhett leaves Scarlett and takes their daughter, she protests, naturally and he frankly tells her that she’s a cold, unloving mother. It’s a painful scene that makes us want to be better mothers ourselves.

8. With enough courage, you can do without a reputation
We’re pretty sure Rhett got all the best lines. And we have to admire his confidence.

9. Why all we have is cotton and slaves and arrogance
Rhett is a cynic and a realist, and knows that the Old Southern way of life is in its dying days.

10. I don’t know nothin’ ‘bout birthin’ babiesPrissy proves she’s either brilliant, pretending to be completely incompetent so as not to help those who oppress her, or incredibly stupid… we’re still not sure.

11. It will come to you, this love of the land
Part of a truly endearing scene with father and daughter.

12. This war talk is spoiling the fun at every party this spring

13. Why, land is the only thing in the world worth workin’ for, worth fightin’ for, worth dyin’ for, because it’s the only thing that lasts
Oh how times have changed… or have they? This line in the film is, of course, about the characters’ present situation but it’s also a political statement that has withstood the test of time.

14. Most of the miseries of the world were caused by wars. And when the wars were over no one ever knew what they were about
Another political reference so poignant and applicable to current times, we shiver.

15. He looks as if… as if he knows what I look like without my shimmy
Scarlett sees Rhett for the first time and doesn’t appreciate how he’s ogling her. We can’t blame the girl though.

16. Sir, you are no gentleman
Well, he wasn’t really acting like one but we love the chemistry between Scarlett and Rhett in this playful scene when they first meet face to face.

Hattie McDaniel was the first African-American Oscar winner for her role as Mammy.

17. Take a good look my dear. It’s a historical moment. You can tell your grandchildren how you watched the Old South disappear one night
The book, of course, takes place during the Civil War and reconstruction of the South.

18. I love you. Because we’re alike. Bad lots both of usIt’s true that Scarlett and Rhett tended to have horrible timing, horrible manners, and horrible things to say about one another.

19. You’re like the thief who isn’t the least bit sorry he stole but is terribly terribly sorry he’s going to jailA true reflection of Scarlett’s character… and that of our children, as well.

20. You’re throwing away happiness with both hands, and reaching out for something that will never make you happy
Rhett to Scarlett, but how many times should someone have told us this in our lives? We seem to all go through phases in life where we don’t see what’s right in front of us as we go after something that will never bring us the joy we seek. Ah, life lessons.
